Make your own Brachistochrone Demonstration

 

Materials

  • 2 large boards of styrofoam 

  • projector

  • hot glue

  • X-Acto knife

  • Hot Wheels tracks

  • ball bearings

Method

  1. Using projector, project a cycloid track onto one styrofoam board

  2. Cut along cycloid path with X-Acto knife 

  3. On second styrofoam board, trace a straight line from beginning

    to the end of the cycloid path. Cut out with X-Acto knife

  4. Connect Hot Wheels tracks and hot glue them to both paths along the styrofoam

  5. Roll ball bearings down both tracks, and observe the solution to the brachistochrone problem!
